The first commercial crops are in

Up on Wood Field, in two of alleys between the fruit trees we have at long last planted our first commercial crop which is oats. The plan had been last autumn to be sowing a by crop of winter wheat and beans but the storms and heavy rain put pay to that. Therefore it has been great to get the oats in and to see them begin to germinate.

Nothing is ever simple in this farming game and it was not long after it was sown that the rooks arrived and started to feast on the seed. This provided yet another shopping opportunity for me. Crop bird scarers. Seems there are a few to choose from. Some make regular bangs but with the cows being pregnant and the dog kennel close by that didn’t seem a great option so instead we have two scary birds on poles flying over the fields. We hope this silent deterrent will work and we will soon be looking at a field of oats swaying in the sunshine.
